Photo opportunities:
why this part of France is special
The medieval village of Montcabrier is perched on a hilltop surrounded by forest and little farms still busy with small numbers of cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, ducks, goats and geese. Local crops include sunflowers, walnuts, corn, fruit, vegetables and, of course, vines. This is the heart of the country known for so long for the distinctive wines of Cahors.
Views from Atelier de la Rose are spectacular over the idyllic valley of the Thèze, a small tributary of the meandering Lot. This is limestone country with dramatic rock outcrops, caves and many underground springs. The buildings have their own unique character in the warm colours of the region's rose-ochre stone.
In the surrounding countryside are walls and ruins to inspire the most jaded visitor. Within a short distance can be found immodest châteaux, isolated farms, an 11th century crypt, 15th century wall paintings, savage cliffs, prehistoric stone structures, vineyards and street markets.
The outstanding beauty of the countryside is exquisite in all seasons. Even as the days shorten the light continues to be exceptional. In winter, with the leaves fallen, one can see even more and the crystal luminosity is a gift for photography.
